Anambra Roadside Market Crash: ACTDA Recalls Federal Lawmaker Insulting Soludo Over Clampdown on Street Trading

By Raymond Ozoji,  Awka

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has been vindicated and his actions against street trading justified following the catastrophic accident that occured at Oye Agu market Abagana Njikoka Local Government Area of the state where a speeding vehicle lost control, rammed into some roadside traders and crushed many to death on Wednesday this week.

Barely few months ago, a federal lawmaker in the state had made a video of herself insulting and using all manner of derogatory statements in casting aspersions on Governor Soludo for banning street trading in the state.

The federal lawmaker in the video accused Governor Soludo for being inhuman, inhumane and insensitive to the plight of the citizenry because the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) clamped down on roadside traders defacing and desecrating the state capital Awka.

In spite of the attack on the person and office of the governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo in his humane disposition, provided free shops for petty traders in Awka at a choice location where they can do their businesses safely devoid of fatalities like the Oye Agu Abagana roadside market catastrophe that claimed the lives of many traders selling along the road.

While Ndi-Anambra commiserates with the families of traders that were killed in the Oye Agu Abagana roadside market crash,  the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) Hon. Osita David Onuko said such ugly episode would have been averted and avoided if citizens respected government policies especially policies designed to forestall unforseen circumstances like the Oye Agu Abagana roadside market tragedy.

Onuko who described the incident as rather unfortunate, maintained that government polices and actions are not intended to deprive citizens of their fundamental rights and privileges but to enthrone an organised society suitable, habitable, conducive and befitting for all and sundry.

He was of the opinion that street trading is a menace and also inimical to the realization of the Smart Mega City of the Soludo administration, adding that the Solution Government is a government with human face.

Onuko also made case for the replication of Solution Arena Fruits and Vegetables Market at Oye Agu  Abagana and other areas across the state where petty traders can be relocated to do their trading without being killed by speeding vehicles as witnessed in the Oye Agu Abagana roadside market tragic incident where some traders lost their lives while trying to earn a living for their families.
