It was a new dawn for the people of Amagu village Ajali Orumba-North Local Government Area of Anambra State, who had been contending with the harsh reality of a completely dilapidated government Model Primary Healthcare Centre with corrugated walls and leaking roofs where rain chased patients and medical personnel around as a result of its deplorable state.
However the joy of the people knew no bounds as Honourable Mazi Paul Obu the lawmaker representing Orumba-North state constituency in the 8th legislature, intervened and renovated the health facility for the locals thereby bringing access to quality healthcare nearer to their doorsteps.
Obu who is also the Deputy Chairman Committee on Health as well as House of Assembly Committee Chairman on Budget, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and International Organizations, built, commissioned and handed over a 3-bed room staff quarters with a magnificent water borehole facility for doctors and nurses who would live in the Amagu Model Primary Healthcare Centre.
Mrs. Joy Obi who hails from Amagu village confirmed that the PHC was completely out of shape as the windows were all broken and the roofs were dilapidated and worn out because whenever it rained, services were disrupted due to the leaking roofs as patients and medical staff scampered for shelter.
Also Mrs. Felicia Okoro-Orji equally corroborated the fact that the health centre had leaking roofs, carapaced floors and general dilapidations but the lawmaker's interventions, she said, changed the situation.
Meanwhile Mrs. Eunice Enekwe, an indigene of Ajali community said people have been complaining about the terrible condition of the health facility and that no help or intervention came from the state government except the most recent response from Mazi Paul Obu, whom she said renovated and refurbished the hospital for access and better service delivery to the people.
On his part, the current chairman of Amagu Development Union who also doubles as the Chairman Ward Development Committee of the Model Primary Healthcare Centre Ajali ward 2, Pastor Okey Nworie, said the PHC is special not only to Ajali community but also to other neighbouring communities because it is a model health facility.
Nworie noted that the health centre is government-owned but abandoned to ruins untill Paul Obu came to its rescue, adding that the lawmaker has not only given the people unhindered access to comprehensive healthcare services but also saved lives with the transformation of the hospital.
The President-General of Umuada Ajali, Deaconess Ihuoma Okoli, said she was excited that the lawmaker came to their rescue because she believed most representatives abandoned their constituents after election but Paul Obu didn't neglect them instead he made them have value for their votes and confidence reposed in him.
Also wife of the lawmaker, Mrs. Stella Obu, who is a Registered Nurse, said life is precious and that what her husband has done through the renovation and refurbishment of the primary healthcare centre was to save lives through access to quality healthcare services to the people.
Paul Obu who is a US-based professional nurse revealed that it has been part of his charity works to cater for the health and well-being of his people even before he became a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly. He said himself and his wife have provided medical assistance and paid hospital bills for people to uplifting humanity.
Obu noted that he was equally working in alliance with the state government to ensure that the entire Orumba-North constituency got access to quality and improved healthcare services, emphasizing that he built and donated a 3-bedroom bungalow to the PHC for doctors and nurses to have accommodations for residency.
He said the reason for building the staff quarters was to address issues of lack of accommodations for doctors and nurses who are posted to Amagu Model Primary Healthcare Centre. Obu also disclosed that another very cogent reason he built the staff quarters was to tackle incidences of absence of doctors and nurses to attend to patients during emergency situations especially at nights.
The Deputy Committee Chairman on Health who stated that it cost him a lot of fortune to build the staff quarters at Amagu Model Primary Healthcare Centre Ajali, said there is adequate security coverage for the hospital to enhance operational efficiency.
