Gunmen have unleashed terror and mayhem on Anambra barely a week after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state to commission some signature projects of the current administration, where Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo also claimed that Anambra is one of the safest states in the country.
The first sad episode was the assassination of a legal practitioner and later identified also as the President-General of Aguleri community in Anambra-East Local Government Area of the state Barr. Ifeanyi Illoakasia who reports say was returning from a court session with his client and another female lawyer in his car on 14th May, 2025 and were ambushed by yet to be identified gunmen who intercepted them at the border between Anaocha and Orumba-North Local Government Areas of the state and shot at the lawyer who was on his seat-belt until he died on the spot.
His client who made an attempt to escape from the car was chased after by the gunmen and killed also in the sporadic shooting. It was however gathered that the life of the female lawyer was spared and that nothing was removed from the Red Toyota Camry car owned by the lawyer, whose remains were abandoned in his car.
Reports also had it that eye-witneses who were making videos of the ill-fated lawyer in the pool of his own blood in his car shortly after the tragic incident revealed that the attack happened close to a police checkpoint in the area but no help came whatsoever.
The slain lawyer was said to have won a case for his client who was discharged and acquitted by a court of competent jurisdiction and that it was in the course of returning from the court session that they were attacked and murdered by the gunmen.
It would be recalled that Barr. Ifeanyi Illoakasia is the President-General of Aguleri community in Anambra-East Local Government Area and had endorsed Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's second term reelection about a year ago following infrastructural transformations in Aguleri community instituted by the Soludo administration.
Furthermore, another gruesome attack was recorded on the night of Thursday 15th May, 2025 at Isuofia the country home of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. It was gathered that gunmen invaded Isuofia town and attacked the entrance police checkpoint to the town; setting it ablaze and engaging in gun battle with security operatives in the area.
However the Anambra State Police Command has issued an official statement, saying that the police is poised to addressing the security breaches.
The statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command SP Tochukwu Anthony Ikenga for the Police Commissioner CP Ikioye Orutugu, has it that security operatives repelled the attack on Isuofia community and two unknown gunmen were neutralized while one police officer paid the supreme price in the course of the gun duel.
