RAYMOND OZOJI reports
As part of the strategic cum concerted efforts to prevent insecurity in the seven towns of Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the Executive Mayor Rt. Hon. Mrs. Iyom Amaka Obi has embarked on the installation of Solar electricity in all the communities to illuminate them to ward-off undesirable elements at night.
Speaking at the official flagg-off ceremony held at the council headquarters Ojoto, Obi explained that the solar system rural electrification project was not only designed to prevent insecurity but also intended to improve on the aesthetics of the communities, stressing that such lightening system depicted modernisation and modernity.
Obi who emphasized that her administration would continue to initiate and execute more developmental projects to address pressing infrastructural needs in the council area, maintained that she was only localizing the Solution Mantra in Idemili-South because Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, according to her, is tackling infrastructural deficits at the state level and there was need to replicate such in Idemili-South Local Government Area under her watch.
She noted that no community would be left out in the installation of the solar energy system and that the project would not be politicized because every town, according to her, deserves the solar energy street lights.
She stated that apart from security and safety of lives and property of the people, electricity breeds development, adding that the solar street lights have already been installed at Nnobi and some other parts of the council area while the installations continue in other towns and communities of Idemili-South Local Government Area.
Obi who observed that the solar panels procured for the Light-Up Idemili-South Project were of government standards, equally disclosed that her regime has also embarked on rural water projects where Awkaetiti, Oba and some other communities have been provided with portable drinking water.
The Idemili-South Mayor had in the penultimate weeks flagged off the construction of a 700 metres road at Aborji village Oba to salvage the pitiable conditions of inhabitants of the area who had suffered untold hardships due to the deplorable state of the road.
Obi who pointed out that the government of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo is connecting all the communities in the state with quality stone-base roads, said Idemili-South Local Government Area is a great beneficiary of Soludo's road revolution as evident in the Nnokwa-Akwaeze-Adazi-Enu road project, Nnokwa-Ichida-Awkaetiti road project and a host of other road projects linking Idemili-South to other council areas of the state.
Although she was also of the opinion that government efforts may not be enough to address issues of critical concerns like road infrastructure and other social amenities, she therefore stressed the need for individuals and corporate bodies with the requisite financial muscles to undertake consequential projects through the government's Public Private Community Partnership model (PPCP) to compliment government's efforts in the provision of basic infrastructures in communities.
A former Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly who hails from Oba in Idemili-South Local Government Area Rt. Hon. Emeka Anyaenetu, lauded the solar electrification project, saying that the initiative will help tremendously in preventing insecurity in the entire council area even as he stated emphatically that Amaka Obi's administration has put smiles on the faces of Ndi-Idemili-South through her numerous empowerment programmes and other laudable initiatives.
The flagg-off ceremony of installation of solar street lights in Idemili-South was witnessed by all the Presidents-General of the seven communities in the council area, councilors, APGA stalwarts and other stakeholders of the local government while samples of the solar materials were used for the ceremony.
