No School In Nigeria Is Cheaper Than Federal Cooperative College Oji River -- Management

         By Raymond Ozoji

The Federal Cooperative College Oji River Enugu state established in 1976 under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has been adjudged as the cheapest tertiary institution in Nigeria.

The school established to address  educational needs of the poorest of the poor in the country, has been in the forefront of churning out Nigerians who upon graduation do not become job seekers in the labour market but job and wealth creators giving other Nigerians platforms to become self-reliant and self-employed; depending less on non-existent white collar jobs.

The Federal Cooperative College Oji River which prides itself with social amenities such as uninterrupted electricity and water supply, internal road infrastructure, very spacious and well-equipped hostel facilities, serenity and teacher-friendly environment, has since inception offered Nigerians of all social strata platforms and opportunities to acquire higher education in National Diploma and Higher National Diploma without tears and frustrations.

Giving further details on the operational standards of the school, the Provost Dr. Owan Obodagu Tonica, who spoke through the college admissions officer Hon. Obinna Ezeano and the Coordinator of Part-time programmes of the college Mr. Isaac Ekabua, maintained that the school fee and other fees of the institution are pocket-friendly.

The Provost disclosed that the tuition fee of the Federal Cooperative College Oji River is N33,500.00 only for both the ND and HND programmes respectively.

He equally disclosed that the admission form is N5000 while Acceptance Fee is also N5000 only. According to him, accommodation for one year is N10,000 which includes constant electricity and water, adding that the Federal Government drastically subsidized the school to meet the academic needs of less privileged Nigerians.

Obodagu also revealed that the Federal Cooperative College Oji River has never for one day embarked on strike since it was established in 1976 as students of the institution graduated in record time and subsequently deployed for the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC).

Obodagu further disclosed that the Federal Cooperative College Oji River has abundant opportunities in the faculty of management sciences where it offers admissions in Cooperative Economics & Management (ND/HND), Banking & Finance (ND/HND), Business Administration(ND/HND), Accountancy (ND), and Marketing (ND).

He said admission  opportunities are also available in the faculty of social sciences where students can study Public Administration at National Diploma level. That Professional Diploma in Cooperative Studies are also available while Computer Science (ND/HND)is open for students in the faculty of Physical Sciences.

The Provost noted that admission is available in the School of Post Graduate Studies where people can study Agricultural Marketing & Cooperative, Business Administration & Management, Banking & Finance and Computer Science respectively even as he also pointed out that all the courses are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

According to him, none of the students have ever crossed the perimeter of the gate to look for water outside because there is constant supply of water not by tanker or trucks but through borehole water facilities within the school premises.

He said that the school is accessible for Nigerians especially as it places more emphasis on the acquisition of technical cum practical skills in agricultural best practices and other spheres of human endeavours.

The Provost however admonished Nigerian youths that rather than sitting at home waiting for years of delayed admissions, the Federal Cooperative College Oji River is a veritable alternative for them to pursue their dreams and aspirations and contribute their own quota to nation building and national development.
